BULLS GAP, Tenn. — Dirt Late Model racers and fans from all across the United States are expected head to Volunteer Speedway for the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series sanctioned $20,000-to-win ... $1,200-to-start sixth annual Scorcher 100 – "A Salute To America's Coal Miners!" on Wednesday and Thursday, Aug. 19-20. Previous Scorcher winners are: Randle Chupp (2004), Rick Eckert (2005), Scott Bloomquist (2006), Chris Madden (2007), Jimmy Owens and Shane Clanton (2008). Race fans from all 50 states and also from several foreign countries visit the East Tennessee region two times a year for NASCAR racing at nearby Bristol Motor Speedway. With Volunteer Speedway hosting big-purse special events in mid-week during August race-week at Bristol, many out-of-state fans in the region for the NASCAR action enjoy making the short drive down Interstate 81 to take in a night of exciting dirt racing on the high banks at "The Gap." The sixth annual Scorcher 100 – "A Salute To America's Coal Miners!" kicks off with a night of open practice on Tuesday, Aug. 18. Pit admission is $25. The pit gate will open for practice at 5 p.m. On Wednesday, Aug. 19, Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series sixth annual Scorcher 100 qualifying and heat races are scheduled, along with a 25-lap Fastrak Racing Series-sanctioned "Courtesy Chevrolet" Pro Late Model feature. Adult grandstand admission on Wednesday is $15. Pit admission and backside tier-parking $30. On Thursday, Aug. 20, the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series $20,000-to-win sixth annual Scorcher 100 – "A Salute To America's Coal Miners!" highlights the racing program. The night's racing action begins with last chance B-mains to complete the starting field for the Scorcher 100. Following the B-mains, big purse money will be up for grabs in the six-lap "Dash For Coal" among the six heat race winners from Wednesday night. The Dash For Coal pays $2,000-to-win while second-place receives $1,000, with the event paying $200-to-start. Also racing on Thursday will be the "McDonald's" Hobby Stocks. Adult grandstand admission on Thursday is $25, kids 7-12 $10, with 6-and-under admitted free. Pit admission and backside tier-parking $30. Both the grandstand and pit gates will open on Wednesday and Thursday at 3 p.m. Hotlaps are tentatively scheduled to begin each evening (when the sun begins to go down) around 8 p.m., to be followed by qualifying and racing action. ***NOTE: Volunteer Speedway does not accept credit cards or checks as payment for purchase of grandstand ticket admission. Cash only!!! A discounted two-night (Wednesday and Thursday) pit admission is available for $50.
